This gorgeous residence at 519-521 Church St was built in 1881. Constructed originally as a multi-family dwelling in duplex style and features an English basement, which was later retrofitted into a fifth apartment. The exterior of this building remains substantially the same as it appeared at the turn of the century as illustrated by the 1938 Sanborn map. The interior was renovated in 1915 by famed architect Stan Hope Johnson and its historic name "Churchland Apartments" appeared in the City Directories as early as 1916.The building had fallen into disrepair and was slated for demolition when it was purchased in December of 2003. As much as possible of the original finishes were restored. The woodwork was taken down and stripped of layers of paint applied over the years and restored to its natural finish. All the plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems were replaced and the building put back into service by the end of 2005 and received the Lynchburg Historical Foundation Merit Award in 2006. These apartments are truly worthy of their historic heritage!
